Tokyo Olympics : Satwiksairaj/Chirag Shetty vs Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin
India kicks off badminton at the Olympics with a men’s doubles match. The world no.10 pair of Satwik & Chirag is up against world no.3 Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin from Chinese Taipei.
India has never faired well in the men’s doubles section, be it the Olympics or the BWF super series. But this young duo has shown a lot of potential, not only have they made their presence felt on the world stage, they have even gone on to win major trophies like the Thailand Open and the silver medal at the Commonwealth games.
Indians are clubbed in group A that also has world no.1 Kevin Sukamuljo/Marcus Gideon, world no.3 Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin, and world no.18 Sean Vendy/Ben Lane.
If you consider the world rankings, you probably would not fancy the Indian pair to go beyond the group of stages. But at the Olympics, the pressure to perform for your country will weigh down many good athletes. This is the first outing at the Olympics for the young Indian pair, and they have nothing to lose. The burden for the other teams is much higher, and this might just work in India’s favour (fingers crossed).
