PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy into the quarters

The world no. 7 PV Sindhu beat USA's Lauren Lam in straight games 21-16, 21-13 in the second round at the BWF World Tour Super 300 Syed Modi International tournament.

Sindhu who suffered a shocking defeat last week at the BWF India Open against Thailand's Supanida Katethong in the semi-finals looked poised to end her title drought at the Syed Modi International tournament. Sindhu beat Tanya Hemanth in straight games 21-9, 21-9 in the opening round.

The fifth seed HS Prannoy entered the second round after beating Ukraine's Danylo Bosniuk in straight games on 18th January. Prannoy was up against fellow Indian Priyanshu Rajawat who had received a walkover in his opening round match against Rahul Yadav Chittaboina.

Priyanshu put up a good fight against Prannoy, won the second game, and stretched the match to a third game. Prannoy, on a comeback trail eventually victorious 21-11, 16-21, 21-18.

Sameer Verma’s campaign came to an end as he retired hurt against Ireland's Nhat Nguyen. The fourth seed was trailing 2-7 in the first game before deciding to concede the match due to a calf muscle injury, which he had sustained in October last year.
