Former world no.1 Kidambi Srikanth lost his third group ‘B’ against world no.8 Lee Zii Jia, 21-19, 21-14, and got knocked out of World Tour Finals.
Srikanth and Lee have met only once before this match at the semi-finals of the HYLO Open 2021, Lee beat Srikanth 21-19, 22-20. With today’s win, Lee leads Srikanth 2-0 head-to-head.
Before this match, Srikanth’s and Kunlavut Vitidsarn’s chances of progressing to the knock-out stage were equal as both had won only 1 of their group B matches.
Vitidsarn’s final match was against France’s world no.33, Toma Junior Popov. The Swiss Open finalist won the match but the Frenchman who had lost his previous matches did not give in easily. Toma tested Vitidsarn and stretched the match to three games. The Thai prevailed eventually in an hour and fifteen minutes, final score, 21-12, 20-22, 21-05.
