The Adcocks announce retirement from World Badminton.
27th May 2021, the 2 times Commonwealth and European champions Chris & Gabby Adcock have bid farewell to the sport.
"This is a very sad day for the world of badminton, for Badminton England and Team GB," said Badminton England chief executive Adrian Christy.
This news comes in after the pair failing to qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The husband and wife duo broke into the main scene in 2013 when the ‘GOLDEN COUPLE’ of British badminton won their first SuperSeries title at the Hong Kong Open. Since then they have represented Britain in many majors including the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Chris & Gabby have missed all the championships from January 2021 after Gabby testing positive for coronavirus.
Mixed doubles pair have won Commonwealth gold in 2014 and 2018, and European titles in 2017 and 2018. They also are the first English players to win BWF World Tour Finals in Dubai in 2015 and claimed World Championships bronze in 2017.
"I'm extremely proud of what we have achieved, I feel incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to be able to do what I love for so long. I will always cherish the incredible moments that shared along with my husband,” Gabby said.
Chris added "Badminton has given both Gabby and me so much. The feeling of competing at the very peak of the world level was always our dream and happily, we got to do that for an amazing 10 years. We have so many amazing memories, some unbelievable experiences & met so many incredible people along the way. All this while traveling the world together”.
The mixed doubles pair’s final professional competitive match was at the 2021 European Mixed Team Championships qualifiers held in December 2020.
