“I aim to take Indian badminton to the highest level globally” - Himanta Biswa Sarma
President, Badminton Association of India Mr. Himanta Biswas Sarma was elected to the Badminton World Federation 20 member council for a period of 4years, 2021-2025. BWF council elections were held on 22nd May 2021.
Mr. Sarma, Chief Minister of ASSAM who is also the Vice president of Badminton Asia got a total of 236 votes in his favor at the virtual AGM and council elections of BWF.
After the elections, Sarma said, “I am thankful to all the member nations for voting in my favor and I take this opportunity to congratulate the BWF president as well as my fellow council members on their appointment”. He continued, “I aim to take Indian badminton to the highest level globally and to establish the country as the badminton powerhouse”.
All the Indian players took to various social media channels to congratulate the BAI president as soon as the election results were announced.
Paul-Erik Hoyer, BWF president, Khunying Patama of Thailand, Deputy President, and Paul Kurzo of Switzerland, Vice President were all re-elected. Along with Mr. Sarma, BAI was represented by VK Verma, Adviser, Ajay K Singhania, General Secretary, and Omar Rashid as observers during this virtual meeting.
